The Double Diamond is a visual representation of the design and innovation process; a simple way to describe the steps taken in any design and innovation project, irrespective of methods and tools used.

Discover

The first diamond helps people understand, rather than simply assume, what the problem is. It involves speaking to and spending time with people who are affected by the issues.

Define

The insight gathered from the discovery phase can help you to define the challenge in a different way.

Develop

The second diamond encourages people to give different answers to the clearly defined problem, seeking inspiration from elsewhere and co-designing with a range of different people.

Deliver

Delivery involves testing out different solutions at small-scale, rejecting those that will not work and improving the ones that will.

Human-Centered Design

Human-centered design is focused on creating products that prioritise the user’s needs, behaviours, and experiences (additionally questioning how you can satisfy those needs in both functional and emotionally meaningful ways).

The four principles of human-centered design are:

  1. People-centered: Focus on understanding people and their contexts.
  2. Solve the right problems: Address root causes, not just symptoms.
  3. Everything is a system: Recognise interconnected parts within a system.
  4. Small and simple interventions: Take iterative, incremental steps, testing and refining solutions.

The process involves deep empathy with users, involving them throughout every stage—from research to testing. ensure products are functional, user-friendly, and effective, aligning both business goals and user needs.
